I’ve recently decided that the ability to run on empty for hours, go out late, get up early, and attend endless social gatherings is a function of my 20’s. A decade fueled by diet coke left me saying “yes” on a dime to any workout and any glass of wine with girlfriends. However, after turning 30 this past fall, I’ve undergone the rude awakening that my effort to stay as energized as I was in my younger years, has resulted in an annoying and honestly unhealthy competitive attitude.
The need to do it all, has been replaced with the desire to do only what brings me happiness, joy and peace of mind. Applying this mentality to my theory of exercise and role of “wellness” in my life has completely changed not only my habits, but my wardrobe. How you might ask? I stumbled upon a strong, courageous and very smart woman CEO, Tyler Haney, founder of Outdoor Voices, a new kind of active-wear for the “non-competitive” mind that values a full, healthy lifestyle above all.
Contrary to the neon, intensity-driven brand definition behind the well known Nikes and Under Armours of the world, Outdoor Voices, approaching activity with moderation, ease, humor, and delight.
A color palette of greys, whites, and slates combined with an ease of style in line with favorite designer brands like Alexander Wang, CEO Tyler Haney designs clothes that are made for “recreationals” and not hard core athletes. She designs for a generation similar to my 30 year old self; the girl that wants to feel comfortable in her own skin, feel fit, look good, get a good sweat by spending time outdoors and with friends. The type that values fitness and fashion, looking stylish and being comfortable while grabbing a salad at Sweetgreen or a glass of bubbly at Eno.
I surrender to 30, where I don’t have to compete with others or myself and my only goal is to be healthfully happy.
